Role of the coach

Coaches frequently stand at the forefront of an athlete's journey. Through countless hours of practice, both on and off the course, navigating tournaments, and everything in between, coaches develop a distinctive and intimate understanding of the athlete. With this in mind, coaches can significantly impact the athlete's mental health and well-being.

TIPS FOR SUPPORTING JUNIOR GOLFERS MENTAL WELL BEING:

Be Mindful

Your emotional neutrality during a junior golfer's event influences their mindset. Remaining composed sets a positive example, reduces stress, and helps them focus on the task at hand.

Emphasize the Process, Not Only The Results

Shifting our focus towards the process instead of just fixating on the results enables athletes to view mistakes as opportunities for growth and self-improvement rather than becoming disheartened. Recognizing and rewarding behaviors and actions during and after rounds promotes the development of habits that pave the way for sustained success.

Allow Disappointment

Maintaining emotional neutrality during a junior golfer's event can greatly influence their mindset. Your calm demeanor sets a positive example, reduces stress, and helps them focus on the task at hand.

Let them feel disappointed

In golf, let juniors process emotions after a disappointing shot before discussing it later for better feedback and reflection.

Set Realistic Expectations

Setting achievable goals is more beneficial than having high expectations in junior golf. Focusing on results can cause stress and anxiety. Instead, set realistic goals separate from the score to avoid hindering progress.

Above All, Have Fun!

Focus on fun and setting a strong foundation for success in junior golf. Wins and losses are secondary to enjoying the game. The journey should be about exploration, learning, and developing habits that will shape future success in golf and life. Work hard, do good, and keep having fun.
